Anne Chestnut’s collages are mostly meditative, working with whatever is at hand. She likes to work in the moment: appreciate the original elements, enjoy something new and leave it be until next time.
What materials are you drawn to?
Junior Non fiction text books are my favourite! They have a great mix of photography, art, titles and text that are fun and easy to work with
Where do you find your materials?
Little free libraries, Noffs Shop and Savers have the best selections. Lifeline Bookshop is also excellent
Do you have some books you've bought for collage that you haven't yet been able to cut up?
No! Nothing is forever! If something really spoke to me I would look to see if i could get another copy first, but i work with what i have in the moment.
Do you begin to make materials first or ideas first?
Always materials first for me. I like to just open up my work and start
Do you have a library of cuttings, and if so, how big is that library and how do you store them?
I only have a small collection of all my cuttings i keep all together in two document folders only. Any more then that and i’d lose track.

Do you lay out lots of bits on a work surface and let relationships emerge from accidental arrangements, or do you go looking for particular elements to cut?
Sometimes i have moods and i’ll go searching through books. but laying it all out to get a nice surprise is my favourite way to work
Are there cuttings you've made that are years old that you've never found a home for?
I cut out a vase with roses and this one national geographic portrait cover on the same day. That was 15 years ago! I will use them eventually. They live in the document folders for now…
What's the longest time that you've held on to a cutting before you found a home for it?
i had some polar bears for about 10 years and just put them all together.
Do you glue your cuttings, or put them into arrangements and photograph them and put them back into your cuttings stash?
I love to reuse cuttings. At the moment I layer cuttings into my ereader so I have a new cover every couple of days
