Since the mid 1990's Mandy King has worked in mixed media, predominantly collage using fashion magazines as a source of colour and tone. After a decade long lapse, her focus on visual arts specially collage was revived in 2023 and enhanced at the unique gatherings of The Social Glue of Sydney.
What materials are you drawn to?
Glossy fashion magazines initially were my go to source of coloured images - my palette. I don’t look for images per se. I have also been taken by the newer series of magazines that use a matte finish. However that poses its own issue - deep blacks are harder to find in them, so I now use both.
Where do you find your materials?
Reverse Garbage, friends donate, ask at my dr’s surgery and buy new as a last resort
Do you begin to make materials first or ideas first?
Image/idea first then materials
Do you have a library of cuttings, and if so, how big is that library and how do you store them?
I haven’t in the past but recently I have kept cuttings left over and put them in plastic sleeves, for use later in other collages.
When I work on a collage I look for/find suitable pieces from the plastic sleeves as well as directly from the magazines, the latter, specially when I need larger pieces.
Do you lay out lots of bits on a work surface and let relationships emerge from accidental arrangements, or do you go looking for particular elements to cut?
I look for particular colours.
Do you glue your cuttings, or put them into arrangements and photograph them and put them back into your cuttings stash?
A combination of using blue tack to position some pieces before rearranging them or gluing them down.
